Where the name comes from

“Whiteford” is an English locational surname from places called Whiteford or White Ford — a shallow, light-bottomed river crossing. Early references appear in medieval records in Shropshire and Staffordshire, where families of the name were largely yeoman farmers, tradesmen and parish figures. From the 1600s the name spread through England and Wales; from the 1700s and 1800s Whitefords appear in North America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Our documented line currently begins with Donald Healy Whiteford (August 22, 1915 – July 9, 1998) and Eliza “Betty” Irene Kinney (September 4, 1916 – December 24, 1983) of Hermon, New York, and their eight children. Every branch on this site descends from them.

They are the root of what we can prove — not the origin of the surname. Anything earlier stays in research until a record connects it.
